Alternative Therapies

GEAAP offers a variety of alternative therapies to its service users. An appointment system is used for all alternative therapies apart from auricular acupuncture which is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
The main therapies offered are:

Auricular acupuncture

A form of acupuncture delivered via the ears. It is specifically designed to help addiction withdrawal. It is also an aid to relaxation, anxiety and stress related conditions.

The treatment is delivered in a non verbal group setting with up to five small sterile needles being inserted gently into specific points in each ear. Participants are then talked through a relaxation exercise.

Sessions last for approximately 45 minutes and are offered five days per week, Monday through Friday at 1pm. Participants are asked to arrive approximately 5 mins before each session.

Auricular acupuncture is intended as a complimentary therapy, designed to be used in conjunction with traditional medical treatments as prescribed by your G.P. please do not stop taking your prescribed medication without consulting your own doctor first.

Reflexology

Is a method for activating the healing powers of the body by stimulating point on the hands and feet. It is believed that areas on the feet have a definite relationship with other parts of the body and by stimulating precise points on the feet other areas of the body benefit.

Benefits can include:

Reiki

Pronounced Ray-Key it means universal life energy, an energy which is all around us.

The method of receiving a Reiki treatment is a very simple process. The recipient lies down and relaxes. There is no need to remove any clothing. The practitioner gently places their whole hands non- intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. The whole person is treated rather than a specific symptom. A full treatment will take around one, to one and a half hours. Reiki can help with physical, mental, emotional or spiritual injuries.

Indian Head Massage

Is based on a system of healing which has been practiced in India for over a thousand years. It provides relaxation and healing. The aim of the massage is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders. The client remaining full clothed sits in a massage chair for the treatment. The therapist uses a range of different movements including application of deep kneading and compression movements over the neck, shoulder and scalp areas. In addition the therapist will also gently stimulate and stroke pressure points on the face. The session will last from twenty to forty-five minutes.

It is especially good for relieving stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches and migraine.
