The Greater Eastehouse Alcohol Awareness Project
Befriending Service

One of the aims of this service is to recruit and train volunteers to become befrienders. Training involves training around befriending skills, as well as access to the Confederation of Scottish counselling Agencies (COSCA) certificate in counselling skills. All befrienders are also subject to an enhanced disclosure through Disclosure Scotland. Once trained volunteers are expected to give a minimum of three hours per week to the service. Volunteers receive travel expenses as well as an allowance to spend when out accompanying their client to various activities.

The second aim of the service is to offer a befriending service to the residents of Greater Easterhouse. Once trained, volunteers are linked with service users in the community who need support to leave the house to access services such as health and leisure or activities such as trips to the shops. Service users who use the service must have current alcohol issues that are stopping them or making it difficult for them to leave the house. They must also be willing to try and address this issue. Befrienders will accompany and support clients to access various services but will not cover any expenses incurred by the client, who will be expected to cover the cost of travel and any entrance fee’s, for example the cinema, for them selves.

The befriending relationship between client and befriender will be reviewed on a regular basis by the service co-ordinator, who will monitor progress and discuss with the client the length of the relationship. The overall aim is for the client to grow in confidence to a point where they will continue the activities they have been supported with once the befriending relationship comes to an end.
